The Hamilton Community Foundation has been very generous to the children of Extend-A-Family since we began to request their assistance and support over the last few years. On June 1, 1998, we received confirmation that the Foundation through the Edith H. Turner Foundation will support the hiring of two Summer Support Workers and there is enough funding left to cover the coming year for the Teen Program. We are very grateful for the Foundation's donation to cover these vital programs for the children and teens.

  • Awards grants to local organizations holding charitable registration with Revenue Canada (or sponsored by an organization with chartiable registration) and serving residents of Hamilton-Wentworth and/or Burlington.

  • Invites applications each spring and fall from community-based groups working within the fields of human services, education, health, the arts, conservation or recreation.

  • Provides grants of varying amounts, as determined by the Board of Directors and its Grants Committee, based on available funds and the potential value of the proposed initiative to the community.

Grantmaking Priorities of Hamilton Community Foundation Include:

  • Support for innovative ideas which address critical community needs and strengthen the community's capacity to care for itself.

  • Encouragement of initiatives which:
      - support children, youth and families
      - exhibit collaboration/cooperation within and across sectors
      - address prevention as a response to challenges
      - involve beneficiaries in planning, implementing and evaluating
      - recognize and build on existing "assests" - that mix of talents, skills, knowledge, relationships and institutions unique to every neighbourhood
      - provide access to opportunities to our diverse community
      - benefit those who are disadvantaged, at-risk and/or newcomers to the community
      - promote the discovery and testing of new ways of providing services.

  • In the Arts and Culture Sector, initiatives which:
      - increase direct participation in cultural activities
      - promote access to cultural activities by those who lack opportunity
      - encourage collaboration among arts groups and with other sectors

  • In the Education Sector, initiatives which:
      - enrich opportunities for children, youth and families
      - encourage innovation and excellence in schools, staff and students
      - focus on keeping youth in school
      - promote safety in schools

  • In the Health and Human Services Sector, initiatives which:
      - encourage a holistic approach to health and well-being
      - involve and promote a preventative, community based approach
      - address violence

    Please Note:

  • Grants are not made to reduce operating or capital deficits; to support ongoing operating costs; to individuals; to religious organizations unless the community-at-large will benefit significantly; to annual, general or capital fundraising campaigns; to promote political, religious, moral or ethical philosophies or for the purpose which may be deemed discriminatory.

  • Requests from local chapters of organizations existing primarily to raise funds for health-related research will be considered only if the project provides service/support for patients or caregivers, or specific health promotion initiatives in this community.

    Review Process

Applications are normally accumulated for consideration twice annually, Spring and Fall. The Foundation will acknowledge receipt of the application and subsequently may send a representative to make a site visit or invite the applicant to address the Grants Committee. Notification in writing as to the board's decision will be given at the conclusion of the review period. Applicants should allow at least three months for completion of this process.

Grantees will be required to enter into an agreement with the Foundation which sets out the terms of the award. Follow-up reporting is expected at time designated in the agreement.
